Salary Calculation Guide: How to Convert Hourly, Weekly & Monthly Pay to Yearly Income

A complete walkthrough of salary conversion math — from the standard 2,080-hour work year to converting any pay frequency into an annual salary. Learn the formulas so you can negotiate, compare job offers, and budget with confidence.

What Is a Yearly Pay Calculator?

A yearly pay calculator is a tool that converts any pay frequency — hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, or annual — into every other frequency so you can see the full picture of your compensation. Whether you're evaluating a job offer that lists an hourly wage, trying to understand how a monthly salary translates to an annual figure, or comparing a biweekly paycheck to a monthly one, the calculator does the math instantly. The key to every conversion is the hourly rate: once you know what you earn per hour, every other pay period can be derived from it using your hours per week and weeks per year.

The 2,080-Hour Work Year Formula

The standard full-time work year in the United States is 2,080 hours, calculated as 40 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks. This is the baseline most employers and financial planners use to convert hourly wages into annual salaries. For example, if you earn $25 per hour, your gross annual salary is $25 × 2,080 = $52,000. If you don't receive paid time off, your actual working weeks may be closer to 50, which would give you 2,000 hours and a $50,000 annual salary. The calculator above lets you toggle between 52 weeks (with PTO) and a custom number of weeks so your conversion matches your real situation.

Converting Hourly Wage to Annual Salary

To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then multiply by your weeks per year. For a $20 hourly wage at 40 hours per week over 52 weeks: $20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600 per year. To find your monthly equivalent, divide the annual salary by 12: $41,600 ÷ 12 = $3,466.67 per month. For a biweekly figure, multiply your weekly pay by 2: $20 × 40 × 2 = $1,600 every two weeks. The calculator handles all of these conversions automatically — just enter your hourly rate and it will show every pay period at once.

Understanding Different Pay Frequencies

Employers use several pay frequencies, and understanding the differences helps you compare offers accurately. Hourly pay means you earn a fixed rate for each hour worked. Daily pay is a flat amount per day worked, typically assuming an 8-hour day. Weekly pay is the amount you receive each week. Biweekly pay is every two weeks, resulting in 26 paychecks per year. Monthly pay is a fixed amount each month, or 12 paychecks per year. Semi-monthly pay is twice per month, or 24 paychecks per year — which is different from biweekly. The calculator above converts between all of these so you can compare apples to apples regardless of how the employer presents the offer.
